LSU Saga: A Continuation
Champions aren’t defined by their victories, but by how they handle the spotlight
Last year, LSU Women’s Basketball Team soared to special heights, clinching the 2023 NCAA National championship with sheer determination.
Staying on top is not easy. Behind every triumph, lies a tale of navigating through the intricacies of fame, dealing with the constant target on your back, and rising above both perceived and real controversies. We believe that champions aren’t defined by their victories, but by how they handle the spotlight.
From hero to villain? Angel Reese's stardom soared after LSU's incredible NCAA championship run in April. During the off-season, ‘Bayou Barbie’ seized business opportunities through NIL deals, featured in Sports Illustrated, Cardi B's music video, and becoming Reebok's inaugural signee under Shaquille O'Neal. Social media once cheered for Reese, praising her authenticity on and off the court. However, in a surprisingly short span, the narrative has shifted. Reese has not be dressed out for LSU and her coach, Kim Mulkey, has demurred, claiming protection of athlete, and facing intense speculation and criticism. Reese has transitioned from hero to villain, facing hate and disrespectful treatment from fans and former supporters. The swift change leaves us questioning the fickleness of public perception and the power of privacy.
While fans have the right to express their opinions and feelings about a team or individual athlete, it’s essential to recognize the line between expressing disappointment and resorting to disrespectful behavior.
Athletes, like anyone else, deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. While fans and detractors may invest a significant amount of emotional energy and support into a team or player, it’s crucial to remember that athletes are human beings who may already be dealing with the pressure of performance, public scrutiny, and personal challenges. Certain behaviors towards athletes can have negative effects on an athlete’s mental health, performance, and overall well-being.
Athletes are humans too! They must be treated as such.
